Boots on the Ground, Again: One Veteran’s Mission to Ensure No One Leaves Their Benefits Behind

Boots on the Ground, Again: One Veteran’s Mission to Ensure No One Leaves Their Benefits Behind

It is one of the greatest tragedies of modern military service: the existence of billions of dollars in allocated veterans’ benefits that go unclaimed every year.

Why? The military is exceptionally effective at teaching you how to fight, but it has historically been terrible at teaching you how to navigate the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) once you take off the uniform.

When transitioning service members sit through their final out-processing briefings, they often find the information rushed and overwhelming. Years later, conditions worsen, new programs (like the landmark PACT Act for toxic exposure) are passed, and veterans are left completely in the dark.

Many veterans also carry a misplaced sense of pride. “I’m not disabled,” they’ll tell me. “Other guys need it more than me.”

My response is always the same: “Taking what you earned doesn’t take a dime away from anyone else. The VA isn’t charity; it’s part of the contract you signed. You paid your dues upfront with your body, your mind, and your time away from family.”

On the Road: Stories from the Front Lines of Advocacy

Ron’s travel has become a mobile embassy of hope. Over the last two years, he has traveled thousands of miles to spread the word. His approach is grassroots, peer-to-peer, and deeply personal.

There was Sarah, an OEF/OIF combat medic working two jobs while trying to manage severe anxiety, who had no idea she qualified for mental health services through the VA—let alone monthly compensation.

There was Frank, a Vietnam veteran in his late 70s living with hearing issues connected to his service, who had never filed a claim because a buddy told him it was “too late.” I helped him file, and three weeks later, Frank called me in tears, saying he could finally afford his prescriptions without choosing between heat and medicine.

“Every time I help someone unlock a benefit they didn’t know existed, it feels like we’re securing a perimeter.” “We’re protecting our own.”

How You Can Help the Mission

This veteran can’t be everywhere at once, but the battle to inform fellow veterans is one we can all join. Here is how you can help bridge the knowledge gap:

Ask the Question: If you know a veteran, don’t just thank them for their service. Ask them, “Are you getting everything you’re entitled to from the VA?”

Share the Resources: Point them toward accredited representatives like DAV (Disabled American Veterans), VFW, or local VSOs who can help file claims for free. Never pay a private company a percentage of your back pay to file a VA claim—accredited help is free!

Stay Educated: Share updates about new legislation (like the PACT Act) on your social media pages. You never know which of your connections is silently suffering.

The Uniform May Be Off, But the Oath Never Ends

As the sun sets behind the windshield of his RV, Marcus checks his route for the next day. A small town in Kansas is expecting him. There are veterans there who don’t know about their earned healthcare, who are paying out of pocket for prescriptions they shouldn’t be, and who carry invisible burdens they were never meant to shoulder alone.

I turn the key, the engine rumbles to life, and he hits the road again. Because for a true soldier, the mission never really ends—it just changes shape.
